Tuck Thatching

We're here to help so don't be afraid to ask ....

It depends on the size and intricacy of the roof as well as access requirements but the average sized roof takes 3-4 weeks for a full rethatch.

We provide a ‘whole package’ quote which includes scaffolding where necessary.  We also deal with pavement licences and road closures if required in conjunction with our scaffolder.  The only extras may be for any woodwork required which is unknown until the roof structure is exposed.  We clearly state any possible extras in our quotes.

Wheat reed should last up to 20 years – may have to have a few repairs here and there.  Water reed should last 20 years +.  Ridges need replacing every 8-10 years for a flush ridge; 12-15 years for a block ridge.

Wheat reed, which is generally grown in the South West or imported water reed. We strive to use the best quality available.

Usually 18 months to 2 years for total re-thatches.  Ridging can be fitted in between larger work.

We always use wire netting on the ridge to help keep the wheat reed (wheat is always used to ridge) and the lattice work in place for longer.  Sometimes the whole roof can be wire or nylon netted to protect from particular problems with wildlife, eg, birds, squirrels etc.

We usually take two or three staged payments for larger work.  A third on commencement, a third mid way through work and a final one on completion.  Payments by bank transfer are our preference.

Simple answer is, you are always learning!  We both started off labouring for about 3-4 years and then trained “on the job” under the guidance of a Master Thatcher.  Increased speed obviously comes with time.

“We are really pleased with the re-thatching; the roof looks as good as new!”
